There is a certain stereotype to bands who follow in the footsteps of Throbbing Gristle, but GROBBING THRISTLE‘s debut inverts almost all of them, building instead on the more neglected aspects of TG’s legacy: the soft, painterly touches of sound, the subtle metabolic effects, the music’s ambiguous perspective on gender. “Hidden Strategies” –with the lonely minimal guitar on “Fifth” hitting like ripples in a pond, they seem more interested in writing the next “Almost A Kiss” than the next “Discipline”. The detached repetition of small voices throughout the album emphasizes their recorded nature. Listening to this album, it isn’t hard to understand what “grobbing” might be, an implacable rhythm that recalls the biological (masses of insects, or a bloodstream?) and mechanical noise in equal measures, and it is a very effective technique indeed. GROBBING THRISTLE‘s music stands up quite well beside Throbbing Gristle‘s recent releases, and occupies a unique place in modern industrial.
