Sound artists Jason Kavanagh (Scotland) and Jaydea Lopez (Australia) celebrate the use of technology to manipulate field recordings in their collaborative release “[dis]location“. Transplanting familiar sonic features into unfamiliar contexts, Kavanagh and Lopez explore the relationship between sound, source and subject. “[dis]location” is composed using the artists’ own field recordings, made in a variety of natural, industrial and domestic environments. Drawing on their respective libraries, Kavanagh and Lopez each created two original pieces (Side A) which were subsequently exchanged and remixed (Side B).The dislocation of sound from source produces recordings which are often unidentifiable from their original form. The intention behind such re-imaginings of field recordings is to create an environment for new sounds to inhabit, bringing into prominence the interpretative freedom of the listener and acknowledging the listener’s constitutive role in the production of sound.
